Baseball & Suicide, The Life Story of Gibby Brack

Today we’re featuring a story on Gibby Brack. Gibby came from a broken home but grew up tough in Chicago’s 27th Ward. He quit school after the 8th grade to work and help provide for his parents, but that didn’t stop him from setting his sights higher in wanting to become a major league baseball player. And that is exactly what he did.
But life for Gibby wasn’t always filled with home runs and cheering crowds. As any professional baseball player would know, it’s tough getting to the majors and even harder staying at that level. Not only that but taking into consideration the playing era we’re speaking of here (1930s/1940s), life after baseball wasn’t easy either especially for Gibby whose struggles seemed to be overwhelming causing him to take his own life in 1960.
Our good friend Jim Ford who is a suicide prevention advocate out of Marietta, GA is also here with us today to share with you special message and a few words of encouragement – all right here on History and Relics.
