In 2024 the average length of time to take in 9 innings a major league baseball game was 2:36:00. Keep in mind, that’s an average of the total games played last year of 2429 amongst 30 teams. Factoring in games with extra innings, and the needle only moves by 2 minutes to an average of 2:38:00.
Now, flashback to 1920 when there were only 16 teams and 1234 games played, the average time of 9 innings was just 1:48:00 and 1:51:00 when you factor in extra innings. Thank goodness that in either century, there hasn’t really been a great deal of games that go into extra innings.
But, of those few, there is one that tops them all from May 1, 1920, when the Boston Braves hosted the Brooklyn Dodgers in what would become the longest game in Major League Baseball – 3:50:00 and 26 innings.
And today, we going to share with you some of the highlights from that game as well as one of the players that scored in that game for the Robins – Ernie Krueger. So, go get your soda, a hot dog, and maybe some cracker jacks, and join us for a great story – right here on History and Relics.
