Frank Emmer The Pride of Crestline, Ohio & the First Non-Major Leaguer to Homer in Municipal Stadium

Small town America, especially during the golden era of baseball produced some of best known and unknown stars that ever played the game. One of those small towns is Crestline, Ohio located about 70 North of Columbus.

Before WWI the spirit of the country thrived on its sports but none more than baseball. The national pastime united diverse populations in this country like no other. So, naturally, the biggest celebrities during this time were baseball players.

At the conclusion of every Major League season there were only 2 teams that go on to play in the World Series—the rest go home or go to Crestline, Ohio. Every October from 1912 to 1916, while the battle for World Series Champ was being decided, there was a sequence of baseball tournaments in north central Ohio.

Major Leaguers such as Ty Cobb and Joe Jackson were just a few of the players to grace the field in Crestline. And not far away, John Peter Wagner, not yet known as “Honus” or “Hans” was playing on neighboring diamonds in nearby Mansfield, Akron, and Steubenville.

Can you imagine growing up and being able to see your baseball heroes in your hometown doing what they do best? Well, we can almost assure you that one youngster from Crestline was certainly inspired by all of this and later became a big leaguer himself – Frank W. Emmer. Haven’t heard of him, you’re not alone but on today’s episode, we’re going to introduce you Frank and share with you his wonderful story that’s sure to be a home run! Right here on History and Relics!
