The mental asylum was the historical equivalent of the modern psychiatric hospital. The word asylum came from the earliest (religious) institutions which provided asylum in the sense of refuge to the mentally ill. One of the oldest such institutions that remains today is the Western Mental Health Institute, formally known as the Western State Hospital for the Insane at Bolivar in Southwest Tennessee near Memphis.
Come along with us today as we share with you some of its architectural history as well as one of its darkest secrets involving Georgia Tann who operated a nearby Children’s home that turned out to be one of the largest black-market adoption and child trafficking operations in the Nation. It’s all right here on History and Relics.
